Sportop Queens post win and suffer shootout setback Sunday in Maryland

ROCKVILLE, Md. – The Thunder Bay Sportop midget AA Queens picked up a win and a suffered shootout setback Sunday in Day 2 play at the Junior Women’s Hockey League Challenge Cup in Rockville, Md.

The Queens started the day with a 3-1 triumph over the Anaheim Lady Ducks before falling 3-2 in a shootout against the Vancouver Island Seals in quarter-final action.

Against Anaheim, Thunder Bay rode the impressive 37-save performance of Aden Johnson and a pair of shorthanded markers to upend the Lady Ducks.

Teresa Rogalinksi staked the Queens to the lead with the lone tally of the opening period with Julia Siciliano and Brooke Herman earning assists on the play.

They then went up 2-0 five and a half minutes into the second as Emilie Varrin struck while her side was down a player finishing a feed from Stefanie Hayward.

Anaheim got their lone goal of the contest later in the session, but the Queens got some insurance with 4:35 remaining in the third as Paige Sullivan provided another shorthanded marker to secure the win.

Johnson was stellar in the contest in a game that saw Thunder Bay get outshot 38-17 overall.

In the quarter-final contest with Vancouver Island it was scoreless through the first period.

In the second Thunder Bay got on the board at 2:10 courtesy of an unassisted effort from Danielle Veneruzzo.

The Seals then countered with consecutive power play markers 63 seconds apart to take a 2-1 lead into the third.

There the Queens would force extra time as Hayward tied it with 2:39 left in regulation, via the power play, with Avery Baker drawing the lone assist.

Thunder Bay pressed throughout firing 40 shots, including six in overtime, on Vancouver netminder Hillary Martens, but in the end it would be the Seals who would prevail in the shootout.

Bailey Chenier faced 20 attempts in defeat.

The Queens wrap-up competition in Maryland Monday morning at 8:55 a.m. vs. Detroit Belle Tire.
