Midget A Queens start 2-0 in Sudbury

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Thunder Bay Topper’s Pizza midget A Queens are off to a solid start at the Snowflake Challenge tournament in Sudbury after posting a pair of wins in Day 1 play Friday.

Thunder Bay began with a narrow 3-2 triumph over the host Sudbury Lady Wolves before going on to blank the Timmins Falcons by a 6-0 count.

Against Sudbury, the Lady Wolves notched the lone tally in the first period before Thunder Bay countered with a couple of markers in the middle session off the sticks of Jamie Ricklefs and Cassandra Carangi.

Sudbury did manage to tie it late in the second, but the Queens got the game-winner from Victoria Darosa with 2:20 left in the third to pull out the victory.

Thunder Bay outshot the Wolves 23-12 with Cameron Ivall picking up the win in net for the Queens.

In the match-up with Timmins, MacKenzie Lehto supplied the only goal the midget A’s would require in the first period with assists going to Breanna Veneruz and Jocelyn Wojciechoswski.

A three-goal middle stanza upped the lead to 4-0 as Carly Hennessey, Caitlyn Olinksi and Brynne Lambert all found the back of the Falcons net in the session.

Thunder Bay then put the game away in the third on additional efforts from Lehto and Olinski.

Anjelina Badanai registered the shutout.

The Queens return to the ice Saturday at 2:30 p.m. as they take on the North Bay Ice Boltz.
