Tough Sledding for Queens Teams at Provincials

MISSISAUGA/BRAMPTON/VAUGHAN, ON — The Thunder Bay Sportop Midget AA, Topper’s Pizza Midget A and Bantam AA Queens are all in Southern Ontario this weekend for the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association Provincials Champion Tournament.

The Sportop Midget AAs got an earlier start with a game on Thursday evening against the Sudbury Lady Wolves where Kaylee Grosjean would manage the only goal in a 3-1 loss.

On Friday morning, they hoped to bounce back against the Peterborough Ice Kats. Goalie Makenna Burke played outstanding but the Ice Kats would eventually open the scoring with less than six minutes to play in the game. With the threat of a second straight loss looming, Molly Kunnas would find Vanessa Nicholl with a pass setting up Nicholl for the tying goal at exactly the two minute mark. Thunder Bay and Peterborough would end up skating to a 1-1 tie.

That afternoon, the Midget AAs put their 0-1-1 record up against the Chatham Outlaws but would only manage a single goal for the third straight game (by Kaylee Grosjean on a setup from Mackenzie Lehto) to Chatham’s four leaving the Midget AAs with an 0-2-1 record.

The Bantam AAs kicked off their tournament Friday morning in a contest with the London Devilettes. Despite the considerable efforts of netminder Linday Humeniuk keeping the Devilettes to a pair of goals, she got no run support as the Queens dropped their first match 2-0.

In the afternoon the Queens met up with host Brampton Canadettes. Thunder Bay opened scoring on a goal by Alexis Paddington in the first period but Brampton would answer with three straight goals for a 3-1 final.

The Bantam AAs will take on the Kingston Ice Wolves Saturday at 8:00am.

Finally, the defending 2017 Bronze Medalist Topper’s Pizza Midget A Queens started Friday off against the Windsor Wildcats at the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association Provincials tournament.

Things didn’t go their way as they managed a single unassisted goal by Makenzie Pettit to the Wildcats’ four. That evening the Midget As faced the Aurora Panthers but would again only manage a single goal, this time from Sibley Duckert, and would allow three the other way.

The Midget As will face the Whitby Wolves on Saturday at 10:30am.
