Peewee Queens Compete in Semifinals at Keating Fall Classic

THUNDER BAY, ON — After starting the Keating Fall Classic with a win and a loss, both 2-1 games, the Peewee Queens looked to take both their Saturday matchups to clinch a spot in the semi-finals of the Peewee AA division Championship.

Their morning date had the Queens face the Peewee AA Neebing Hawks at 9:15am. Mackenzie Kostiuk got the Queens on the board on a setup from Alexis Prepp and  Bridget CameronCameron then turned goal scorer for the Queens second goal of the game with help from Annie Mallon who drew the lone assist. Neebing, however, wouldn’t go away quietly scoring a couple goals of their own leading to a 2-2 draw after regulation which meant the victor needed to be determined via a best-of-3 shoots shootout. Makara Magbanua would score on her attempt while goalie Abby Wills stopped the Hawks’ first attempt. Rhae Thomas would also score on the Queens second attempt forcing Neebing into a “score or go home” scenario which Wills would again stonewall the Neebing shooter, winning the game for the Queens.

The final game of the Peewees’ round robin would come up against another team boasting a 2-1 record, the KC Sabres. A win would clinch a spot in the final four, a loss may leave them needing help from other teams. It would end up being a pretty one-sided affair with Thomas, Cameron, Kostiuk and Brynn Hannula all picking up goals as goalie Alexandra Young earned a 20-save shutout taking a 4-0 win and putting the Peewee Queens into a Saturday evening semi-final meeting with the tournament host, Westfort Rangers, who defeated the Queens earlier in the tournament 2-1.

In the semifinal game, Westfort would jump to a 2-0 lead on the Queens. With time winding down, the Queens pulled their goalie pressing for the comeback but the Rangers would score on the empty goal. With nothing to lose the Queens kept the goalie out going 6-on-5 but eventually the Rangers would notch another empty net goal, winning 4-0. The Peewee Queens drop out of the Keating Fall Classic in the semis, an improvement on last year in which they did not make the semifinals.
