Gridlink Queens take Silver at Keating Fall Classic

THUNDER BAY, ON — Sunday morning the Gridlink Atom Queens entered their semi-final matchup against the KC Knights. Jayden Bannon would get the Knights on the board first but Vienna Minnella would score on a play from Kayla Grant and Sophia Campagna to tie the game at one. In the second, KC would again jump ahead with Ben Cella finishing on a feed from Peter Vlotaros. Once again, the Queens were equal to the task as Grace Dorey would score to tie the game; Morgan Barenz and Olivia Vinet drew assists. 2-2 after two. The combination of Dorey, Barenz and Vinet would come up big for the Queens again in the third as Vinet scored to take the lead and then Dorey would put up the insurance marker as Barenz drew her third straight assist in the game. 4-2 final.

The win over the KC Knights vaulted the Queens into their second straight year in the Championship game of Keating Fall Classic, this year they’d take on the Westfort Maroons. The game would come right down to the wire but in the end the Maroons would edge out the Queens 4-3.

It was a close final game, a great tournament for the Gridlink Atom Queens and a good indicator of the growth in skill development of womens hockey in Thunder Bay. This is not only the 2nd straight year the Queens have been in the final but the 3rd straight year an all-girls team has made it that far as the Atom Fury won the Championship in 2016.
