Peewees make Semi-Finals, Bantam As to play for 7th
BLAINE, MN — The Peewee and Bantam A Queens both played a pair of games Saturday at the Centennial Super Chill tournament in Blaine, Minnesota.
The Bantam As arrived at the Schwan Super Rink for a game at noon taking on Minnetonka Blue. Minnetonka must have gotten a better nights sleep as they outscored the Queens 5-0 and outshot them 30-17. In the evening, the Bantam As would play the host Centennial team. They’d come closer than their afternoon game but ultimately drop the decision 3-2 to Centennial. The Bantam A Queens will play for 7th place on Sunday against Anoka/Rogers/Elk River at 10:10am.
Meanwhile, the Peewees started off the day facing the #6 ranked team in Minnesota, the North Wright County RiverHawks. The Queens got off to a good start on a goal by Brynn Hannula but the RiverHawks would tie the game. 1-1 after two. Makenzee Kostiuk setup Bridget Cameron who’d score in the 2nd period to take the lead. The Queens looked to take the win but a questionable call in the crease of the Queens net led to a penalty shot which North Wright would score on to tie the game. 2-2 final.
In the late afternoon, the Peewees faced Centennial/Chisago Lakes in a must win game to reach the semi-finals on Sunday morning. The Queens immediately took held of the game on a series of quick goals from Hannula, Kostiuk, Maguire and then another goal from Hannula as the Queens took a 4-0 lead into the second where they got off to another quick start as Rhae Thomas scored two goals in the opening 2:14 of the period. Alexandra Young would need to only stop 6 shots to earn the shutout in a 6-0 win.
The Peewee Queens will face Minnetonka, the #2 ranked team in the state, in the semi-final Sunday morning at 8:15. A loss would put them in the bronze medal game at 1:35pm and a win, in the Championship game at 2:55pm.
