Queens Teams Host Gentry Academy

THUNDER BAY, ON — This past weekend the Thunder Bay Queens hosted a couple teams from Gentry Academy for an exhibition series. The Bantam AA, Gridlink Midget A, and Sportop Midget AA Queens teams would get to play the U14 and U19 teams. The Midget AAs played Gentry U19 twice, the Bantam AAs played U14 three times, and the Midget As played two games against the U19s and one against the U14s.

On Friday, the Bantam AAs and Gentry U14 played their first game. Taylor Barenz opened the scoring on a play setup by Meggie Mallon and Kaiya Kamande scored late in the second to put the Bantam AAs up 2-0 but Gentry would comeback with four unanswered goals to win the first match 4-2.

Gentry U19 would get their first game of the weekend against the Midget As. While the Queens would get on the board first, they couldn’t hold off the onslaught of the more senior U19 team. Olivia Nicholl and Hailey Wrigley would score in the physically hard fought game, losing 6-2 in the process.

Saturday morning, the Sportop Midget AAs would get their taste of action taking on the U19 team. Gentry opened up a 2-0 lead quickly before Victoria Darosa got on back for her side. Gentry, though, would get 4 goals of their own while the Queens only other answer was Alexis Paddington scoring on a penalty shot. 6-2 final for Gentry.

The U14s started their day with with the Gridlink Midget As. Caitlin Olinski would benefit on a play from Olivia Nicholl, scoring early in the game. The lead nearly held the entirety of the game but with the goalie pulled for the extra attacker, Gentry would score with 6 seconds left in the game to send it to OT where Gaby Andreacchi would end the game with a beautiful goal. 2-1 final.

After a nice break, the U14s returned to the rink to face the Bantam AAs. After a goalless first, Gentry opened the scoring early into the second, which was answered 50 seconds later with a goal from Kamande to tie the game but Gentry would answer back 35 seconds after that to re-take the lead. In the third, the U14s scored 3 straight goals while Taylor Barenz managed one in a 5-2 loss.

Saturday night, the Midget AAs and Gentry U19 played a rematch from that morning. Mackenzie Lehto's early goal was met with a response from Gentry, tying the game at one but Darosa would score just 7 seconds later to regain the lead. In the second, Gentry scored an equalizer early but Molly Kunnas would put the Queens back up in short order. But in the dying minutes of the second, Gentry scored to tie the game up and then repeated this in the dying seconds of the third as well, taking their second straight game from the Midget AAs by a score of 4-3.

On Sunday morning, a couple early game took place starting with the Bantam AAs getting one last crack at the U14 team. They’d trade off goals in the first as Kamande tied the game. 1-1 after one. In the second, Kamande notched her second goal, giving the Queens the lead. Gentry, though, would score two goals early in the third and then pot an empty net goal to take it 4-2.

The U19 Gentry team finished off their weekend with a morning slate against the Midget As who, despite losing 3-0, felt very positive about the game and the entire weekend.

The Thunder Bay Queens would like to thank Gentry Academy for making the trip up from Minnesota to join in this series. Thanks for coming and have a safe trip back!
