Martinsen Breaks the Ice at Icebreaker

DULUTH, MN — The Bantam AA Queens kicked off the St. Luke's Icebreaker Invitational with a game against the hosts, Duluth Icebreakers on Friday evening. Duluth got a big early jump on the Queens scoring 47 seconds after puck drop and then scored again just 47 seconds after that to take a 2-0 lead. The Queens though would settle things down and after the Icebreakers got a penalty for Too Many Players at the midway point of the period, Joanna Martinsen would get the Queens on the board with a powerplay goal. Before the first ended, Martinsen would setup Paige Broughton who’d score and cancel out Duluth’s early lead. 2-2 after one.

In the second, Martinsen continued to pull the Queens along, scoring off a setup feed from Ella Mannila to give Thunder Bay their first lead of the game and 33 seconds later, they’d extend on it as Taylor Barenz would feed a pass to Kathryn Lacosse who’d score. Akira Tatebe would add another second period marker as the Queens had fully turned the game around with three second period goals for a 5-2 lead.

Duluth got one back in the third but Martinsen would notch her 4th goal, 6th point of the game soon after with Mannila drawing an assist (her 4th of the game) and Riah Compardo added a late goal, assisted by Alessia Ricciardi, to complete the 7-3 rout.

The Bantam AAs will take on Anoka/Rogers at 9:45am Saturday.
