Bantam AA Queens Reach Finals at Icebreakers Tourney

DULUTH, MN — After a decisive 7-3 win over the Duluth Icebreakers, the Bantam AA Queens looked to keep thing rolling on Saturday morning in their matchup against Anoka/Rogers/Elk River. Taylor Barenz scored early into the game on a play from Caryss Kehl to give the Queens a 1-0 lead. Goalie Mykaila George would need to hold the narrow lead into the third period until she got some run support on a goal from Kaiya Kamande (assisted by Ella Mannila) followed by some extra insurance as Riah Compardo setup Akira Tatebe to give the Queens a 3-0 lead. As it turned out that was more than George needed to work with as she earned a shutout.

Saturday night, the Queens were placed in a semi-final matchup against the Madison Capitols. Goals would be hard to come by as the first period ended scoreless. Finally in the second period, after drawing a crosschecking penalty, the Queens’ Kamande scored on the powerplay to give Thunder Bay the lead. Queens netminder Reese Keating would hold the narrow lead and, with no further scoring from her team, thankfully she was perfect the rest of the way, also getting a shutout for her team in a 1-0 win.

With that victory, the Queens will take on the Chicago Young Americans on Sunday at noon at Amsoil Arena for the championship.

Over in the 10U-A, the Gridlink Atom Queens got their tournament started against White Bear Lake. After going up 3-0 in the first on goals from Grace Dorey (assists to Morgan Barenz and Olivia Vinet)Ava Hrubeniuk, and then a second goal from Dorey (assisted by Vinet), White Bear Lake would score five unanswered goals in the third as they’d defeat the Queens 5-3.

Things didn’t improve for the Atoms as they’d drop a 6-1 decision to Blaine/Spring Lake Park. The Queens again would open the scoring (Sophia Campagna) but then six goals went back the other way.

The Atom Queens will take on Mahtomedi on Sunday at 8:00am.
