Attema, Young put up Shutouts in Cupid Classic

BLOOMINGTON, MN — After a 1-1 start to the Cupid Classic in Bloomington, Minnesota, the Gridlink Atom Queens looked to keep things on the positive side of the Win-Lose ledger against Prior Lake but they’d put themselves in a hole as Prior Lake would score  a goal in each period giving them a 3-0 lead in the final frame. Maddy Arthur, though, would get the Queens on the board, followed quickly by Ava Hrubeniuk just 12 seconds later to cut the lead to one with a full 10 minutes remaining. Unfortunately, they couldn’t manage the equalizer and they’d drop the game 3-2.

Now 1-2-0, the Atoms prospects on Sunday looked to be in danger and would need to pick up a win against the Shakopee Sabres. After a goalless opening frame, the Queens finally broke the goose egg in this one after Ayla Wrigley and Maddy Arthur setup Vienna Minnella for the first goal of the game. The Queens added to the lead with 12 seconds left in the second on a goal from Sophia Campagna (assisted by Morgan Barenz and Grace Dorey). Netminder Allie Attema put up a wall in front of her net, shutting out the Sabres in an eventual 2-0 win.

The Peewee Queens, also at the Cupid Classic in the 12U-A division, took on Eastview on Friday night. Despite the Queens doubling up Eastview in shots in the first 8-4, the period remained scoreless. The Peewees then turned up the pressure in the second, dominating Eastview in shots 19-0 and getting rewarded on the scoresheet as Brynn Hannula scored and then in the same shift, assisted on a goal by Bridget Cameron just 38 seconds later. The shots evened out in the third but goalie Alexandra Young did not allow the goals to as she remained perfect, shutting out Eastview in a 2-0 win.

Saturday morning the Peewees met Chaska/Chan. It was an eventual 4-goal first period as each side traded off scores with Kingston Golding and Hannula burying biscuits for Thunder Bay. Chaska/Chan, however, managed a couple 2nd period goals to take a two goal lead. Despite outshooting their opposition 24-17, the Queens couldn’t complete the comeback, dropping a 4-2 decision.
