Gridlink Atom Queens Reach Semis at Neebing Classic

THUNDER BAY, ON — The Gridlink Atom Queens met up with the Westfort Maroons on Saturday morning but didn’t get the result they wanted. A couple goals from Olivia Vinet and Sydney Ritson were answered by 7 goals from the Maroons, handing the Queens their first loss of the tournament.

The Atoms, presumably, got some rest and returned in the afternoon to face the Westfort Rangers and would strike first and second, opening a 2-0 goal lead early off the sticks of Vienna Minnella and Grace Dorey. The Rangers, though, answered back on the efforts of a hat trick from Deacon Panacheese. Dorey scored again though and Ava Hrubeniuk would tack-on the eventual winner as the Queens skated to a 4-3 victory.

Their 3-1-0 result gave the Queens a birth in the Quarter Finals against the Neebing Hawks that evening. The girls would dig themselves into an early hole as Neebing got two goals in the first but they clawed their way back in the second as Shayla Stokaluk scored to cut the lead and then Dorey erased the lead shortly after. Nothing was decided in regulation so this playoff game went to overtime! In OT, Sydney Ritson would get the puck to Ava Hrubeniuk who’d score the game winner and send the Gridlink Queens onto the Semi Finals!

The Queens will meet back up with the Westfort Maroons on Sunday morning at 10:30am. A possible Championship game will be held at 3:15pm.
