Gridlink Midget As Hit “Lucky 7” Twice at CanAm Cup

MADISON, WI — The Gridlink Midget A Queens made their way to Madison, Wisconsin this weekend to compete in the CanAm Challenge Cup.

On Friday, they started bright and early at 8:00am against the Kansas City Storm. The first period yielded no goals but in the second, the floodgate opened for the Queens. Mylee Zechner opened the scoring off a play from Caitlyn McGuire and Sarah Grieve. Next Sibley Duckert buried the biscuit with Julia Buchan drawing an assist. Shorty after, Grieve would notch the Queens 3rd goal of the period on a setup from Kaiden Lanteigne. Grieve would then setup Emma Johnston for a goal just 32 second later. Johnston scored again (assisted by Caitlin Olinski and Gaby Andreacchi) with 36 remaining for a total of 5 goals in the middle frame. The Queens continued their scoring ways as Olivia Nicholl (from Andreacchi and Hannah Leung) and Duckert (from Kayla Stein) scored in a 7-0 drubbing. Mya Gowanlock probably didn’t need to be perfect but she was anyway, getting a shutout. It was a good team effort as 12 different skaters got on the scoresheet.

In the afternoon, the Midget As met up with the Wolverines from Chicago. Nicholl and Johnston put the Queens up early both scoring just 39 seconds apart. In the second, Nicholl got her second goal of the game after a play from Stein while Andreacchi managed another taking a 4-0 lead into the third where Nicholl and Andreacchi both completed their respective hat tricks scoring once and twice respectively. Like her counterpart, Camryn Williams would also shutout her opponents in a 7-0 victory.

The Midget A Queens will take on the Lady Lancers at 4:00pm on Saturday and hope to find themselves in either the Bronze or Gold Medal games on Sunday.
