Midget AA, Bantam AAs Get Started at CanAm Cup

MADISON, WI — The Thunder Bay Queens two ‘AA’ teams are in Madison, Wisconsin to compete in the CanAm Challenge Cup.

The Sportop Midget AA Queens played their first game in the U19 division against Team Colorado on Friday morning. A trio of Queens goals in the first period got them off to a great start as Mackenzie Lehto buried one early, with helpers from Brenna Nicol and Riley Thompson, followed by Kailey Swerhun and Alexis Paddington both scoring shorthanded goals 39 seconds apart. Paddington scored again to open the second (assisted by Brynne Lambert and Darbie Mattson). Paddington, along with Victoria Darosa, then helped setup a scoring chance for Molly Kunnas who’d bring the score to 5-0. Team Colorado answered back with a goal of their own but Kendra Fortin quickly quieted down any chance of momentum scoring shortly after, setup by Jessie Scott. Team Colorado actually outshot the Queens 24-21 but Kamryn Sandelovich only surrendered the single goal in a 6-1 win.

Meanwhile, the Bantam AA Queens took on the St. Louis Lady Blues in U16 action. The Blues jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first before adding to that early in the third period. The Queens pressed taking 11 shots in the final frame but only managed a single goal by Taylor Barenz. 3-1 final.

Back in the U19 division, the Midget AAs faced the hometown Madison Capitols that evening. The Capitols opened the scoring in the first. It looked like the Queens had tied the game in the second period on a powerplay but the goal was called back for a "crease violation", a quirk in the officiating Canadian teams must be aware when playing in the States. With that lesson learned, the powerplay carried on until Paddington promptly setup Kunnas for the equalizer. This one would count. Kunnas would then score again, putting her team up 2-1. In the third, Paddington put up an insurance goal early on and it would come in handy as Madison replied with a goal of their own. That was as close as the Capitols would get though as Sandelovich held the lead. 3-2 final.

Saturday, the Bantam AAs hunt for their first win against the Anaheim Lady Ducks at 12:00pm before taking on the Madison Capitols at 6:00pm. The Midget AAs also take on a Lady Ducks team from Anaheim on Saturday at 10:00am and then get the Petoskey Northmen at 7:30pm.
